Kitale Museum

Regional museum with ethnography, natural history, and a nature trail

The Kitale Museum sits in pleasant grounds on the edge of the town centre and covers the natural and cultural history of the western Kenya highlands. The main building houses ethnographic displays from the region's communities alongside natural history exhibits focused on the flora and fauna of Mount Elgon and the surrounding highlands.

The museum grounds include a nature trail that winds through a patch of indigenous forest — home to some of Kenya's western highland bird species that are hard to see elsewhere. An agroforestry demonstration project adjoins the museum. Allow a couple of hours for a thorough visit. The museum is run by the National Museums of Kenya and is open daily except public holidays.

A story
The museum's collection includes artefacts from the many ethnic communities of western Kenya — Bukusu, Sabaot, Luhya — alongside colonial-era objects and a collection of tools from the region's farming history. It is one of the better regional museums in Kenya for understanding the communities of the western highlands rather than the wildlife-focused narrative that dominates most tourist presentations of the country.
