Rock Art Shelters

San rock-art shelters within the Maloti-Drakensberg World Heritage landscape.

Sehlabathebe has documented rock-art sites, part of the same cultural landscape that makes the Drakensberg famous. These shelters are not museum displays; they sit in the open mountain environment, vulnerable to weather and careless visitors.

Go with a guide if you can. Do not touch the paintings, wet them for photographs, or mark the rock around them. The best visit is quiet and brief, with the shelter left exactly as you found it.

A story
UNESCO values the wider Maloti-Drakensberg landscape for both nature and culture, including one of the densest concentrations of rock paintings south of the Sahara. Sehlabathebe forms the Lesotho side of that shared heritage.
