Clara Town

Clara Town is a dense residential neighbourhood on the northern edge of Monrovia's peninsula, home to a mix of lower-income families and long-established communities. It has a more settled, neighbourhood feel than the more chaotic areas closer to the city centre, with established markets, churches, and community structures.

Walking through Clara Town offers a view of ordinary Monrovia life — the rhythm of school runs, market days, and evening socialising that persists through the city's larger upheavals. The neighbourhood's proximity to the Mesurado lagoon and the fishing communities on the waterfront adds another dimension to a walk here.

A story
Clara Town takes its name from Clara Boone, a 19th-century Liberian woman of settler descent who was known for her charitable work with indigenous Liberians. The neighbourhood has been one of Monrovia's most consistently populated areas through multiple crises, partly because its residents organised their own defence networks during the civil wars.
