Sapo's bird list runs to well over 590 species, with strong representation of Upper Guinean rainforest specialities that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. Among the prize sightings are the rufous fishing-owl, the white-breasted guineafowl (Upper Guinean endemic), the white-necked rockfowl (the Picathartes — actually found at scattered cave sites in the broader region rather than Sapo itself, but the area is on the list), and a long roster of hornbills, turacos, greenbuls, sunbirds and bristlebills.
For serious birders the park is an obvious draw, with the caveat that infrastructure is minimal and routes inflexible. Joining a small group with a knowledgeable local guide is the standard way to go, and dawn at the forest edge near Jalay's Town is the easiest single window for picking up the morning chorus.
