Benghazi Lighthouse

The Benghazi Lighthouse stands on the Sidi Khrebish coast north of the city centre, an active lighthouse marking the approach to the port. The lighthouse and the surrounding coastal area provide some of the best sea views in Benghazi, looking out over the Gulf of Sirte. The neighbourhood itself, while largely residential, is one of the older parts of the city.

Access to the lighthouse area depends on current security conditions — the Sidi Khrebish neighbourhood saw significant fighting during the 2014-2017 battle for the city and parts of it are still being rebuilt. The lighthouse continues to operate as a navigational aid. For visitors with access to a vehicle, the drive along the northern coast road gives good views over the city and the bay, and the lighthouse marks the turning point of a coastal loop that takes in the corniche.

A story
The Benghazi Lighthouse marks the Sidi Khrebish peninsula, which juts into the Gulf of Sirte north of the city centre. Sidi Khrebish has significant archaeological importance — beneath the modern neighbourhood lie the remains of Berenice, the ancient Greek and Roman city that preceded Arab Benghazi. Excavations in the area have turned up Greek-era finds going back to the 5th century BCE, making the lighthouse neighbourhood one of the longest continuously inhabited areas in Libya.
