Benghazi's tourist infrastructure was limited even before 2011, and much of what existed has since been damaged or disrupted. The old city centre — with the corniche, the tree-lined Maydan al-Shajara square, the old municipal hall, and the ancient Atiq Mosque — retains character despite the years of conflict. The 23rd July Lake beside the city centre is a pleasant place to walk in the evenings. Visitors currently travel here primarily for business or NGO work, not tourism, and should consult current security guidance before any visit.
