Al-Atiq Mosque

Al-Atiq Mosque is Derna's old mosque, in the Al-Bilad district on the left bank of Wadi Derna. It is traditionally associated with the Karamanli period and is known for its clustered small cupolas, a local solution to roofing without abundant timber.

The old city suffered badly in the 2023 flood, so confirm the mosque's condition and access before visiting. Even if you cannot enter, it remains a key reference point for understanding Derna's historic core.

A story
Al-Atiq means 'the old', and in Derna the name fits. The mosque's many small vaults were a practical answer to local building conditions where long timber beams were scarce.
