Derna Waterfalls

The Derna waterfalls lie south of the city in the Jebel Akhdar foothills, on a seasonal tributary near Wadi Derna. They are one of the few places in Libya where fresh water, greenery and exposed limestone meet in a recognisably mountain setting.

Access depends on road and security conditions, and the area should be checked locally before setting out. If reachable, it is best visited as a short excursion from the city rather than an independent wander into the wadi.

A story
The waterfalls are fed by the same mountain-water system that made Derna feel lush by Libyan standards. That gift has a harder edge: the wadi that brings water also brought devastation when the dams failed in 2023.
