Wadi Derna

Wadi Derna cuts down from the Jebel Akhdar to the sea, dividing the city and giving Derna much of its character. In calmer times the wadi explains the greenery and water features that made the city unusual by Libyan standards.

Since the 2023 flood, it is also the city's most sensitive landscape. View it with a local guide, keep clear of unstable banks and damaged bridges, and remember that many families lost homes and relatives along this corridor.

Wadi Derna is usually dry or modest, but in September 2023 it became the channel for one of the deadliest floods in modern Mediterranean history. The disaster was not just natural: failed dams upstream turned storm rain into a wall of water.
