Turkish Fort

The restored Turkish fort is the clearest historic landmark in modern El Merj. It dates from the Ottoman period, when the town served as a local administrative and market centre in the Green Mountain country.

The fort is a useful visual counterpoint to the rebuilt post-earthquake city around it. Ask locally about access; even when interiors are closed, the exterior helps make sense of El Merj's older street pattern.

A story
The fort belongs to El Merj's Ottoman layer, before Italian colonial maps made Barce familiar to European soldiers. It is a reminder that Cyrenaica's history was not just Greek and Roman.
