Garama Ruins

The ruins of Garama are the core of Germa's importance. This was the capital of the Garamantian Kingdom, a Saharan power whose wealth rested on oasis agriculture, caravan trade and control of routes through the Fezzan.

Do not expect towering columns or a reconstructed city. The fascination is subtler: low walls, mud-brick traces, cemetery fields and the knowledge that a complex urban society flourished here in what many outsiders wrongly imagined as empty desert.

A story
Roman writers treated the Garamantes as desert raiders beyond the frontier, but archaeology shows a settled oasis civilisation with towns, cemeteries and engineered water systems. Germa is where that stereotype falls apart.
