Ceramics Workshops

The ceramics tradition in Gharyan is one of the town's defining features, and the workshops clustered near the main road are easy to find — you'll smell the kilns before you see them. Potters throw on foot-powered wheels and fire in wood-burning kilns, producing glazed bowls, water jugs, tagine-style cooking pots, and decorative plates.

Prices are reasonable by any standard, and the pieces travel reasonably well if you wrap them carefully. Buying here is more interesting than picking up the same items in Tripoli's souk, where the selection is wider but the workshops are invisible. A few of the larger workshops have a small showroom attached, where you can watch production and buy directly from the maker.

A story
Gharyan's potters use clay deposits from the hillsides around the town that have been worked for at least five hundred years. The characteristic glaze — an earthy green or amber over terracotta — is mixed with a local mineral found only in this area, giving Gharyan ware a look distinct from pottery made anywhere else in Libya.
