Nafusa Mountains Views

The hills around Gharyan offer the most accessible mountain scenery in western Libya. The town sits at the eastern end of the Nafusa escarpment, and the roads leading out of town wind through terraced olive groves, fig orchards, and rocky outcrops with views over the plain below.

You don't need a guide to explore the immediate area — the main road south toward Ghadames passes through increasingly dramatic landscapes as it descends from the plateau. For closer walking, the tracks around the edge of the escarpment give good views without requiring any technical hiking. The air at this altitude is noticeably cooler than the coast, which makes summer visits far more pleasant than the sweltering lowlands.

A story
The Nafusa Mountains form a limestone escarpment that runs east-west for nearly 200 kilometres, rising abruptly from the flat Jefara plain. At Gharyan the escarpment reaches about 900 metres, and on clear days the view from the town's edge extends northward all the way to the coastal haze near Tripoli.
