Gharyan's appeal is rooted in its Nafusa Mountain landscape and its surviving troglodyte dwellings — underground homes carved into the hillside that kept families cool in summer and warm in winter. The ceramics workshops clustered around the old town are still active, and watching potters work the distinctive local clay is one of the more satisfying stops in western Libya.
