Soatanana

Betsileo revivalist village known for Sunday processions and white-robed worshippers

Soatanana is a village northwest of Fianarantsoa associated with the Fifohazana revival movement. Its most memorable sight is on Sunday, when worshippers dressed in white gather for church and process through the village singing hymns.

This is not a staged folk show, so go carefully. A guide who knows the community is strongly recommended, both for transport and for etiquette. If you are respectful, Soatanana gives a rare glimpse of Malagasy highland Christianity as a living local practice rather than a museum subject.
