By air: Toamasina has a small domestic airport (TMM) with daily flights operated by Air Madagascar from Antananarivo. The flight takes around 45 minutes and is the quickest option; fares fluctuate considerably and advance booking is recommended during the dry season.
By road: The RN2 connecting Antananarivo to Toamasina is the most important road in Madagascar and is in reasonable condition by national standards, though sections near the escarpment are frequently damaged by landslides in the wet season. The journey takes 5–7 hours by private car or organised minibus. Taxi-brousse (bush taxi) services run throughout the day from the main station in Antananarivo; the journey is cheaper but takes 8–10 hours and involves considerable discomfort.
By rail: The Fianarantsoa–Côte Est (FCE) railway runs from Fianarantsoa on the central plateau down through the rainforest escarpment to Manakara on the coast. It does not reach Toamasina directly, but travellers combine it with onward transport. The line is one of Madagascar's great journeys — slow, unreliable, and spectacular — passing through terrain that no road reaches.
From the port: Occasional cargo boat services connect Toamasina with other east coast ports (Manakara, Farafangana) and with Nosy Be in the north. These services run on irregular schedules and should not be relied upon for fixed travel dates.
