Reniala Reserve near Ifaty protects a compact but rewarding patch of spiny forest north of Toliara. It is especially good for baobabs, birds, and a close look at the dry-country plants that make this corner of Madagascar feel so different from the rainforest east.
The reserve works well as a half-day trip from Toliara or as part of a stay around Ifaty and Mangily. Go early for cooler temperatures and better bird activity, and take a guide so the forest does not blur into thorny anonymity.
