Lake Kazuni

Lake Kazuni is a shallow, reed-fringed lake at the southern entrance of the reserve, fed by the South Rukuru River and the seasonal marshes upstream. It is the single best wildlife viewing location at Vwaza: a resident hippo pod of well over a hundred animals lives in the water, elephants come down to drink throughout the day, and antelope, warthog, and buffalo move along the shoreline.

The camp and its hides sit directly on the lake edge. You can spend hours here without moving, watching the comings and goings; in the late afternoon the action picks up sharply as the heat goes out of the day. Crocodiles are present and the water is bilharzia-positive — do not paddle.

A story
The resident hippo pod at Lake Kazuni is one of the densest in southern Africa — sometimes a hundred or more animals packed into a shallow water body the size of a small lake. The grunting at dawn carries for miles across the bush.
