Sanga Market

The Dogon use a five-day market cycle, and Sanga's market is worth timing your visit around if possible. The market brings together people from the scattered villages across the plateau and escarpment, and it is one of the more vivid social occasions you can observe in Dogon country. The range of goods is primarily local: grain, vegetables, cloth, livestock, and the various items of everyday life in rural Mali.

The market day is also when local musicians sometimes perform, and when the social interactions between different Dogon communities are most visible. Ask your guide or the local tourist office which day the market falls on during your visit — the cycle shifts against the standard week, so it's always different.
