Bandiagara Escarpment Treks

From Sanga, three standard trek routes run along the Bandiagara Escarpment: the Petit Tour (one day, covering the nearby cliff villages), the Moyen Tour (two to three days), and the Grand Tour (four to five days, going deeper along the escarpment). All require a local guide, which can be arranged in Sanga. Hostels in each village provide basic accommodation and food.

The escarpment itself — a sandstone cliff rising 500 metres above the plain — is spectacular. The Dogon villages cluster at its base, along its face, and on top of the plateau, each in a slightly different relationship with the rock. The most visited have clearly adapted to tourism; the further along the escarpment you go, the less trodden the path. Abandoned Tellem burial caves, carved into the cliff face above the villages, are visible from below and on some routes accessible. The villages of Bongo, Banani, and Ireli are all within range of Sanga and worth including.

Note: the region has faced security concerns since 2012. Check current travel advisories before going. The situation has varied considerably by area and by year.

A story
Marcel Griaule, the French anthropologist who spent 25 years studying the Dogon, conducted most of his fieldwork here at Sangha. In 1946 he spent 33 consecutive days in conversation with an elder named Ogotemmeli, who revealed a cosmological system of extraordinary complexity. Griaule's accounts of Dogon astronomy — claiming the Dogon had ancient knowledge of Sirius's companion star, invisible to the naked eye — became one of the most debated claims in anthropology.
