Fulani Weavers and Blankets

Mopti's Fulani craftspeople produce some of the most striking textiles in West Africa: the koubou, a large woven wedding blanket traditionally given by a bride's family, features bold geometric patterns in indigo, cream, and earthy red that are immediately recognisable and have become prized by collectors worldwide. The narrow-loom strip weaving technique used to make them takes years to master, and experienced weavers can be found at work in the old town quarter and in the market area.

Workshops where you can watch weaving in progress are accessible off the main market area; asking to see the process is generally welcomed. Buying directly from the weaver produces a better price and ensures the money reaches the maker. Smaller textiles and bags made from off-cuts of koubou fabric are also available and make more portable souvenirs.
