Sankore Mosque

Medieval seat of Islamic learning, now UNESCO site

The center of the legendary University of Timbuktu, which at its peak had some 25,000 students and one of the largest collections of manuscripts in Africa. Hard to imagine today when you see the crumbling mud-brick structure, but this was once one of the great seats of Islamic learning. The mosque is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Non-Muslims generally cannot enter, but the exterior and courtyard are worth seeing.
