Timbuktu's main draws are its three ancient mosques, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the sense of having reached a place that defined "remote" for centuries. The town is compact and you can see most of it in a day or two. Hiring a Tuareg guide is worthwhile -- they know the history and can get you access to places that would otherwise be closed.
