Getting There

Amogar is on the main road between Atar and Chinguetti, the ancient route across the Adrar plateau. The pass is roughly 25km from Atar and the full drive to Chinguetti takes 2–3 hours depending on conditions. A 4x4 is required — the track through and beyond the pass is ungraded piste, and standard vehicles will not get through except in the driest conditions.

The road is passable for most of the year, but avoid travelling after heavy rain: flash floods can cross the track without warning, and the steep sections through the pass are slippery on wet rock. The best approach is to hire a 4x4 with driver in Atar, where vehicles and experienced drivers are available through guesthouses and the informal network around the main square. Atar itself is reached by road from Nouakchott (9–10 hours on paved road) or by Air Mauritanie flights when they are operating.
