The Agadir d'Atar is a ruined fortified granary on the rocky plateau above the town, the remnant of the communal food-storage system that sustained Adrar communities before the modern era. The walk up from town takes about 20–30 minutes on a rough path and is best done in the early morning before the heat builds.
From the agadir there are good views over Atar and the surrounding desert — the flat-topped mesa landscape of the Adrar plateau extends in all directions, broken by the occasional palm grove marking an underground water source. The ruins themselves are not in the best condition but the site and the views make the climb worthwhile.
