Chinguetti Excursion

Chinguetti, 90km northeast of Atar, is the most important historical site in Mauritania and one of the great Saharan cities. The medieval quarter — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — contains a famous 13th-century mosque with a distinctive mud-brick minaret, crumbling library towers, and traditional stone houses slowly being swallowed by advancing dunes.

The road from Atar crosses the Adrar plateau through dramatic desert scenery. The last stretch requires 4WD. In Chinguetti, the private manuscript libraries are worth visiting — several families open their collections to visitors for a small fee. The manuscripts include astronomical tables, Islamic jurisprudence, poetry, and mathematics from the 14th to 18th centuries. The medieval mosque and the old quarter together justify the journey from Atar as a full day or overnight trip.

A story
Chinguetti was founded in the 13th century and became one of the seven holy cities of Islam and the most important gathering point for trans-Saharan pilgrims heading to Mecca. At its peak it had over 20,000 inhabitants and a library tradition so strong that families still own private collections of medieval manuscripts. The sands have been encroaching since the 18th century, and the old city is now partly buried.
