Ayoun el-Atrous sits on the main paved road east from Nouakchott through Kiffa to Nema, which continues toward the Malian border. Bush taxis and trucks run in both directions, though schedules are unreliable and departures happen when vehicles are full. The journey from Nouakchott takes roughly 12–16 hours depending on the vehicle and conditions. Nema, 350 kilometres further east, is the end of the paved road and the main base for onward travel toward Mali. Fuel and basic supplies are available in Ayoun el-Atrous, making it a standard refuelling stop for overland travelers.
