Nouakchott lacks the classic tourist sights, but rewards travellers who come to understand it. The beach market, the central souk, and the Saudi Grand Mosque are the main reference points. For most visitors the city is a staging post — but a day or two spent properly gives a glimpse of a society in rapid, uncomfortable transition from nomadic life to the urban present.
