Old Mosque

The old mosque stands among the ruins of the Ksar el Klali, its minaret topped with an ostrich egg — a traditional Saharan symbol of protection. Like much of the ancient town, the mosque has been largely abandoned since the population shifted downhill to the modern settlement, but it remains structurally intact and is one of the most evocative buildings in Mauritania's ancient ksour.

Non-Muslim visitors should ask permission before approaching closely. A local guide is the easiest way to arrange this respectfully.

A story
The ostrich egg finial on Saharan mosque minarets is not merely decorative — it served a practical purpose. Ostrich eggs were believed to repel evil spirits, and their placement at the very top of the minaret was thought to protect the congregation below. Every ancient mosque in Mauritania's caravan cities carries one.
