Wadi and Date Palm Groves

Below the cliff ruins, the wadi that gives Ouadane its name ("two wadis" in Arabic) cuts through the plateau and supports a belt of date palms. The palms are the town's most important agricultural resource and the reason anyone settled here in the first place — fresh water, shade, and dates for caravan provisions.

Walking through the groves in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden and the temperature drops, is the most pleasant hour in Ouadane. The contrast between the dead-looking desert stone above and the green of the palms below is striking. Ask at your guesthouse about the best path down from the town.
