Chamarel Waterfall

The Chamarel Waterfall drops about 100 metres in a single plunge into a narrow basalt gorge, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Mauritius. The viewpoint is a short walk from the car park at the Seven Coloured Earth site — the same admission ticket usually covers both. From the viewing platform you look down into the gorge where the water fans out into mist against the dark volcanic rock, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation.

The flow is strongest after heavy rain, when the waterfall becomes a roaring torrent of red-brown water carrying highland soil. During the dry season it is still picturesque but more modest. The gorge itself is inaccessible from the viewpoint — there is no trail to the base — but the elevated view over the drop and the surrounding forest is rewarding.
