Varangue sur Morne

Varangue sur Morne is a long-established restaurant on the edge of the Black River Gorges area, with one of the most dramatic views in Mauritius — the terrace looks directly over the forested gorge and out toward the Le Morne peninsula and the lagoon. On a clear day the panorama stretches for many kilometres.

The kitchen focuses on Franco-Mauritian cuisine: French technique applied to local ingredients, with an emphasis on seafood and the freshwater fish from the highland rivers. The tasting menu is popular and represents good value given the cooking quality and the setting. This is one of the better restaurants in the southwest, and it gets busy at weekends — reservations are strongly advised.

A story
The name "varangue" refers to the wide covered veranda that wraps around traditional Mauritian Creole houses — a shaded outdoor space designed for the island's climate. The restaurant leans into this heritage, with its open-sided terrace design directly echoing the colonial plantation architecture of the surrounding region.
