Anse aux Anglais

A small coastal village and beach on the northern coast, sheltered within the lagoon and generally calmer than the more exposed eastern beaches. The water is shallow and clear, with good conditions for snorkelling close to shore. A handful of small guesthouses and restaurants have sprung up around the beach, making it a practical base.

The coastal path east from Anse aux Anglais gives good views across the lagoon to the reef. Fishing pirogues are usually drawn up on the beach, and local fishers are generally willing to talk about their work.

A story
The name — English Bay — recalls 18th-century naval manoeuvres in the Indian Ocean. Today it's simply one of the most accessible beaches on the island, with calm, clear water suitable for swimming at most tides.
