St François Beach

Remote white-sand beach on Rodrigues' southeastern tip, watch octopus fishers on the reef flats

A long, exposed stretch of white sand on the southeastern tip of the island, backed by low scrub and almost always empty. The lagoon here is very shallow at low tide — you can wade hundreds of metres out. This is also where you're most likely to see women fishing for octopus on the reef flats, working with traditional traps at low water. Getting there requires a 4WD or a walk, which keeps the crowds (such as they are) away.
