North and east of Dakhla, the Saharan landscape opens into large dune fields accessible by 4WD. Local operators run half-day and full-day excursions into the desert, combining dune driving with stops at viewpoints and occasionally visiting nomadic encampments. The scale of the landscape is hard to overstate — the dunes here are not the neat photogenic rows you see in travel brochures but a chaotic, wind-shaped wilderness with no obvious end.
If you have your own capable 4WD vehicle, independent exploration is possible but requires a local guide: some areas near the southern border remain mined from the conflict era, and certain roads are closed by the military. Do not go off-road without local knowledge. The organised tours from Dakhla take you to areas that are safe and properly surveyed, and the guides know where the view points are worth stopping.
