The crossroads of Avenue Hassan II and Avenue Mohammed V is the social centre of Erfoud — a wide red-dust square with café terraces on every corner, slow-moving taxis pulling in for fares, and a steady trickle of vendors selling fossils, dates, and the occasional carpet. Sit in any of the cafés over a mint tea, give it half an hour, and most of the town will eventually pass by.
The best time is late afternoon, when the light goes apricot and the heat eases off; in summer the square only really wakes up after sunset. Around the second weekend of October the Festival des Dattes takes over the streets here for three days of dancing, processions, and date-tasting.
