Oukaïmeden Ski Resort

Oukaïmeden is Africa's highest ski resort, sitting at 2,650 metres in the High Atlas about 75km south of Marrakech. The season runs roughly from December to March, snow permitting. The resort has a handful of lifts, including a chairlift reaching 3,258m, and a dozen or so runs of varying difficulty. For European skiers used to the Alps, the infrastructure feels basic, but the experience of skiing with a view of the Moroccan Atlas and knowing you're skiing in Africa is genuinely unusual.

In summer, Oukaïmeden is a destination for hikers. The plateau above the resort has good wildflower displays in late spring and early summer, and the surrounding peaks offer day walks. The village also has a set of prehistoric rock carvings — animals and human figures etched into boulders above the resort, the most accessible of several such rock art sites scattered across the High Atlas.

The road up to Oukaïmeden from the Ourika Valley is steep and narrow in places. In summer, a 4WD is not required, but in icy winter conditions it becomes essential. Rental cars in Morocco typically lack snow chains, which is a problem if you're driving up for skiing — ask your rental company specifically about this.
