Rose Distilleries

Several cooperative distilleries operate on the outskirts of Kelaa M'Gouna, and during the harvest season (May to early June) a few will allow visitors to watch the distillation process. The method is traditional steam distillation: petals are loaded into copper stills, steam passes through them, and the resulting condensate separates into rose water and a small quantity of rose oil on the surface.

The cooperatives are genuine production facilities, not staged tourist shows, so your reception depends on the day and how busy the harvest is. Outside season, the shops attached to the distilleries sell rose water, essential oil, soaps, and cosmetics at prices considerably lower than you would pay for the same products in Marrakech or a European market.
