A vast Jewish cemetery in the Mellah, with thousands of whitewashed graves laid out in dense rows under the medina walls. It is Morocco's largest Jewish burial ground, with graves dating back to the fifteenth century when Sephardim arriving after the Spanish expulsion swelled the existing community. A handful of older tombs are marked as the resting places of rabbis and scholars and still draw quiet visits from the small remnant Jewish community.
The caretaker at the entrance can point out the most significant graves. Modest dress, head covering for men.
