Sunday Souk

Weekly Berber market in Nkob

Like every village of its size in the southern Atlas, Nkob has a weekly souk — held on Sunday morning on the open ground just off the main road. Farmers come down from the surrounding palmeries and from villages in the Saghro foothills to trade dates, almonds, henna, dried herbs, livestock (goats, sheep, the occasional camel) and second-hand clothing. There are stalls of agricultural tools, plastic kitchenware, sweets, and small piles of fossils dug out of the surrounding plateau.

The atmosphere is unhurried and emphatically not tourist-focused. Mornings are busier than afternoons; by mid-afternoon most traders have packed up and left.
