Jebel Saghro

Wild volcanic mountain range north of Nkob

The Jebel Saghro is the volcanic spine that separates the Drâa Valley from the higher Dadès and the High Atlas to the north — a starkly beautiful, semi-arid range of black basalt cliffs, plateaus and gorges, sparsely inhabited by Aït Atta Berber semi-nomadic families. Nkob is the southern gateway and the easiest base for trekkers.

The classic multi-day route (3 to 7 days) crosses the Saghro from the village of Tagdilt north towards the Dadès. Shorter day-walks from Nkob climb to the plateau above the village. A local guide is essential — water sources are scarce and trails unmarked. The best season is March to May, when nights are no longer freezing and water is still flowing.

A story
The Saghro was the last redoubt of the Aït Atta Berber confederation, who fought a French colonial army of some 80,000 troops to a standstill in the Battle of Bougafer in February 1933 — one of the final acts of armed resistance to the French Protectorate.
