Grande Mosquée de Safi

The Grande Mosquée sits at the heart of Safi's medina, its minaret visible from most of the old city. Like most Moroccan mosques, the interior is closed to non-Muslims, but the minaret and the decorated main facade are worth seeing from the lane outside. The mosque was substantially rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, incorporating Andalusian tilework and carved plasterwork in the style that spread across Morocco as refugees arrived from Granada.

The square in front of the mosque is one of the main gathering points in the medina, particularly in the evenings when families come out for a walk and street vendors set up their carts.
