Ameln Valley Hike

The Ameln Valley, stretching northeast of Tafraoute, contains 26 Amazigh villages scattered across the hillsides above a broad floor of almond and argan trees. The walk between villages — along mule tracks and dry riverbeds — is the best way to see the area. The valley is best accessed on foot or by bicycle; a road runs along its length but the real interest is in climbing up to the villages themselves.

Oumesnat is the most-visited village, its pale houses plastered into a granite cliff face as if the rock has simply grown around them. From above, the view down the valley is one of the best in the Anti-Atlas. In February, when the almonds are in blossom, the valley floor turns white and pink — one of southern Morocco's finest seasonal spectacles.
