Tiznit (90km northwest) — a walled town known for its silver jewellery workshops and the medina built in 1882; a good half-day outing and the nearest town of any size.
Agadir (165km northwest) — the coastal resort city, rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake; useful for transport connections, supermarkets, and the beach if you need a break from the mountains.
Igherm and the Aït Baha Road — the mountain road south from Tafraoute through Igherm to Taroudant is one of the most spectacular drives in the Anti-Atlas; dramatic gorges and passes, mostly paved. Igherm itself has a weekly souk.
Anti-Atlas villages — hire a car or arrange a guide to explore the network of villages in the valleys around Tafraoute: Aït Mansour gorge (30km south), with its ancient kasbah and palm-lined river, is one of the finest half-day excursions in the area.
