Rock Climbing

The smooth granite outcrops around Tafraoute have made the area one of Morocco's better rock climbing destinations, with routes ranging from easy slabs to more serious faces on the larger formations. The rock quality is generally excellent — solid granite that takes gear well and offers friction climbing on its rounded surfaces.

Most climbing is concentrated around the Napoleon's Hat formation (a distinctive rock pillar visible from town) and the boulders near the Ameln Valley. The best season is October to April; the summer heat makes climbing unpleasant and potentially dangerous. A few local guides offer half-day introductions; experienced climbers can explore independently using a topo guidebook.
