Most of what brings people to Tofo is in the bay itself, but a couple of easy trips break up the diving and surfing. The closest is the Barra Peninsula, a narrow palm-covered sandbar that curves north from Inhambane and ends at a colonial-era lighthouse. The beaches there are quieter than Tofo's, the snorkelling off the point is good, and it works as either a half-day outing or an overnight escape.
The historic port town of Inhambane, about 22 km west, is the other obvious stop — a sleepy, pretty old town of whitewashed colonial buildings, a cathedral, a busy market, and dhows crossing the bay. Chapas run the route from Tofo regularly, making it an easy morning or afternoon away from the beach.
