Most of what brings people to Vilanculos is offshore — the Bazaruto Archipelago is one of the finest marine environments in the western Indian Ocean. But the town and its surroundings have their own pleasures: good beaches, dhow sailing, and a market that gives a genuine sense of local life. The red sand dunes north of town, visible from the sea, are worth exploring at low tide when the sandflats stretch for kilometres.
