Vilanculos

Mozambican coastal town and main gateway to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

Vilanculos is the main gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago and, for many visitors, the highlight of a Mozambique trip. It's a small, relaxed coastal town that has grown considerably with tourism without losing its easy character. The beach in town isn't the finest — you're here to reach the islands — but the sunsets over the bay are spectacular.

Most travellers pass through Vilanculos on the way to Bazaruto or Benguerra Island, staying a night or two to sort logistics. The town has a good spread of accommodation, from backpacker lodges to mid-range hotels, plus restaurants serving excellent fresh seafood. The local market is worth a wander. North of town, the red dunes that give the coastline its distinctive terracotta colour drop to pale sandflats at low tide — good for a walk.

The classic activity in the bay is a day out on a traditional dhow. Local operators run trips to sandbanks and snorkelling spots using the same wooden sailing boats that fishermen have used along this coast for centuries. It's unhurried, practical, and often the most memorable day of a visit.

Eating Out

Seafood is the reason to eat in Vilanculos. The town's restaurants live off the daily catch — prawns, crab, lobster, and fish are all genuinely fresh. The prawns here are particularly good: large, sweet, and prepared simply with garlic and butter in most kitchens, or grilled over charcoal at the smaller beach spots. Standards vary considerably, and the best places are often the quieter ones away from the main tourist strip.

Getting There

By air: SA Airlink operates scheduled flights from Johannesburg to Vilanculos Airport, a short drive from the town centre. Flight time is under two hours. From Maputo, connections usually require routing through Johannesburg. Charter flights also operate from Inhambane and other Mozambican towns — useful for accessing the island lodges.

By road: From Maputo, Vilanculos is around 700km north on the EN1, Mozambique's main north-south highway. The road is paved but in variable condition; allow a full day and don't plan to drive after dark. Chapa (shared minibus) connections run from Inhambane and from Maxixe, though the journey is long and uncomfortable for non-essentials.

To the islands: All island transfers are handled by lodges or local operators in Vilanculos. Most island lodges arrange speedboat or light aircraft transfers as part of their packages — confirm this before you arrive, since independent access to the archipelago is difficult.
