Mesosaurus Fossil Site

Desert farm fossil site showing evidence from the ancient Gondwana supercontinent

The Mesosaurus Fossil Site lies north-east of Keetmanshoop on a desert farm. The fossils here belong to a small prehistoric reptile that lived in an ancient inland lake, and matching fossils in South America helped support the story of continental drift.

Visits are usually by guided tour. The appeal is not just the fossils, but the setting: quiver trees, dolerite rock, dry air, and a landscape that makes deep time feel less abstract.
