Bilma's appeal is its setting, not its town. The two essential sights are the salt pans on the eastern edge — still worked by hand, much as they have been for a thousand years — and the dunes of the Tenere immediately to the west. A small French-era fort, the palm gardens, and the chance of seeing an Azalai salt caravan complete the picture.
